What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an effective therapy to reduce stress related to trauma. The American Psychiatric Association and World Health Organization recognize EMDR as an effective treatment for PTSD and trauma.

EMDR is an evidence-based approach, meaning it is backed by research. Many people have found EMDR helps relieve symptoms related to anxiety and depression.

How does EMDR work?

The brain heals itself, similar to how the body recovers from injuries. Your brain can process and store memories in a healthy manner, but sometimes traumatic memories get “stuck,” and your brain cannot fully heal and process the painful memories.

EMDR helps your brain reprocess the memory, which means you won’t get flooded with uncontrollable memories and feelings anymore. You will still remember the incident, but it will be less disturbing, and you will have a general sense of well-being. Most people will see results in the first few sessions, although it might take several sessions to fully work through the painful memories

What can I expect in an EMDR session?

The first few sessions will focus on coping skills and preparation. From there, we will start working on the memories and use eye movements or tapping to help you process the memory. During reprocessing, you will gain new insights and perspectives about yourself and the incident(s). Read this blog post and watch the video below for more information about EMDR therapy
